To produce a comprehensive analysis of Randall Jarrell s complete poetry. A chronological study of Jarrell's poetic development through close explication of numerous published and unpublished poems will demonstrate grantee's central thesis; Jarrell's intensely emotional yet recognizably humanistic central themes remained constant throughout his career, but he strove to perfect early techniques to present specific characters and existential dilemmas in later poems.
