A two-part study of housewifery, women's other social roles, and social policy. Part one: Further development of a theory of gender stratification that considers the housewife status as the core social role for women in industrial society. Part Two: Test of theory through analysis of the social policies in selected industrial societies, in terms of how they support or fail to support women's ability to fulfill or alter obligations to their domestic roles.
