To consider certain manuscript readings and lacunae in the extant text of Petrarch's Africa, and to study Latin epics and other poems prior to Petrarch such as Ekkehard's Waltharius (10-11th centuries), Baudry de Bourgueil's poem to Adela (11th century), Gautier de Chatillon's Alex- andreis (12th century), Alan de Lille's Anticlaudianus (12th century) and Quilichinus of Spoleto's Historia de Preliis Alexandri Macrni (13th century). Examination of these other Latin poems will place Petrarch's Africa in its proper literary context.
