This project explores the connections between the traditional architecture of the Spanish-Moorish house and women's literature in the Spanish-speaking world. From June 1 to July 31, 2005, I will write two chapters of a book that explores how the particular features of this domestic architecture--such as its barred windows, white walls, and inner courtyards-- has suggested a literary rhetoric for women writers. This project is truly interdisciplinary, as it seeks to draw together information from architecture, Islamic studies, literature, Hispanic studies, and gender studies.
