An NEH Summer Stipend is requested to support the research and writing of a chapter-length essay analyzing the form, style, and arguments of the lyceum lectures of Elizabeth Oakes Smith in the 1850s. This essay will form a chapter in a planned book- length project in rhetorical history that examines the mutual influences of the nineteenth-century woman's rights movement and popular lecturing.
