Sophonisba Preston Breckinridge (1866-1948) was an influential U.S. educator and reformer who advanced feminism, challenged racism, embraced pacifism, alleviated poverty, and defended civil liberties both at home and abroad. By weaving together Breckinridge's life story and her lifelong commitment to social justice, I will produce both an engaging story and a provocative analysis of important and enduring themes in American history. My biography of Breckinridge will weave together the strands of women's history, social welfare, and foreign policy; make important contributions to our understandings of feminist activism, international relations, and the welfare state in the modern era; and improve our understanding of the interconnections between the humanities and social sciences. An NEH Summer Stipend will allow me to complete my archival research and thus facilitate my authorship of the definitive biography of a remarkable individual who dedicated her life to social justice.
