History 299: The Historian's Craft is a four-credit hour class required of all history majors at Clemson University. The class is intended to introduce students to the process of historical inquiry and culminate in the production of an independent research paper. This grant will fund revisions to the class that will allow students to examine individual recollections of the Mexican-American War by Southerners through their diaries and letters. Their findings will be presented to the larger university community in an academic conference and a short documentary, to be produced with the assistance of students in the Communications Department. Over the course of this class, students will transcribe their subjects' letters and upload them to a publicly-accessible website on Southern soldiers in the Mexican-American War. In doing so, they will make available a wide range of documents on this conflict previously accessible only through state archives.
