Planning for two traveling exhibitions, a catalog, a website, and public programs on William Shakespeare and the ways that his life and work have been re-imagined over time.
The Folger Shakespeare Library requests a grant to fund the planning of SHAKESPEARE IN HIS WORLD--AND OURS, a major exhibition that will mark the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare in 2016. This project includes an exhibition that will travel to the Folger and two other major venues, as well as SHAKESPEARE AND HIS FIRST FOLIO, which will tour all fifty-four states and territories and feature one of the Folger's 1623 First Folios. This Humanities Dissemination Project will both combat misconceptions about Shakespeare and demonstrate ways that he continues to engage 21st-century audiences. A rich exhibition catalog and companion website, complemented by active use of social media and other digital tools and apps, will serve to broaden the audience. This grant will bring together the scholarly advisors and other collaborative partners to frame and organize the broad scope of topics for effective presentation in these multiple formats and venues.
