FAIN: GY-10143-73

Barnard College (New York, NY 10027-6909)
Mark C. Carnes (Project Director: June 1973 to present)

To answer a number of questions about the changing nature of the small city community in America. To gain some insight into the present problems of this troubled city, and to promote a sense of community consciousness by encouraging this community to become involved in its past. To systematically study newspaper microfilm, institutional data, diaries, cultural artifacts and interview inhabitants of Newburgh in order to understand the people of Newburgh, their institutions and their past. The project members will jointly write a lengthy social history of Newburgh and disseminate their conclusions by giving talks to local groups.
