To record and analyze the development of the concept of American courage in the twentieth century through an examination of its expression in painting, photographs and film media. Ten high school students will collect exemplary portrayals of American heroic figures and research historical literature so as to develop a description of individual figures and the social and ethical issues and concerns surrounding their heroic portrayal and thereby to produce an analysis and explanation of transformations in the expression and conception of American courage relative to corresponding changes in social and ethical values and concerns. For public dissemination.
