The prototype development for a generalized, extensible platform that will allow for real-time exploration, annotation, and tours in 3D computer models, using the NEH-funded Digital Karnak as the test case.
Funding from the NEH is requested to develop a generalized and extensible prototype for software that will allow real-time exploration of highly-detailed, three-dimensional computer models in both formal and informal educational settings. This prototype will address the greatest challenge for building knowledge through use of three-dimensional computer models by providing scholars and educators the mechanism to explore, annotate, craft narratives, and build arguments within the 3D space - in essence, facilitating the creation of virtual learning environments that can be broadly disseminated to educators and learners across grade levels and humanities disciplines. The prototype will use as a testbed the existing real-time model of the Egyptian temple complex of Karnak created as the basis for the learning and teaching resources now freely available on the Digital Karnak website.
