Implementation of a traveling exhibition, a catalog, films, and related programs on paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts produced in Spain between 1598 and 1621.
The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University are co-organizing an international loan exhibition focused on the art of the period between 1598 and 1621, entitled El Greco to Velázquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III. In addition to sections devoted to the late works of El Greco and the early paintings by Velázquez, it will feature paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts organized around themes such as portraiture, religion and the court, the private collection, and still life and the rise of naturalism. This project inlcudes a catalogue, comprehensive interpretive materials, and a variety of public programs designed to reach a broad audience. These will include lectures, tours, a random-access audio tour for adults and families, collaborations with other cultural organizations in Boston, teacher workshops, two originally produced films, and readings from the classics of the period.
