Shelton Historical Society (Shelton, CT 06484-1155)
Ellen Kolesk (Project Director: May 2006 to January 2008)

A general preservation assessment of 48 linear feet of manuscripts, 1,500 vertical files, 1,000 photographs, books, and ephemera related to the social, cultural, and business history of Shelton, Connecticut, from 1820 to the 1970s.

The project would engage a conservator to examine the collection and its storage conditions, and determine the knowledge of the staff concerning preservation matters. The conservator will then prepare a report on institutional policies and procedures, fire protection and security concerns, and provide recommendations for improving storage and handling practices and establishing conservation priorities. A general preservation survey report will serve as a key component for future grant applications to secure funding to implement recommendations and for solicitation of donations for completing the conservation work of key items in the collection.
