2007 NEH Rehousing Project, Phase II

FAIN: PG-50393-08

Animas Museum (Durango, CO 81302)
Janet W. Postler (Project Director: May 2007 to October 2009)

The purchase of supplies, staff training, and rehousing of historic and ethnographic collections that document the history and culture of the San Juan Basin, with a focus on Durango and La Plata County, Colorado.

The 2007 NEH PAG Rehousing Project, Phase II, will significantly improve storage conditions for and access to the Animas Museum's humanities collections by providing conservation supplies, training and a curriculum for rehousing and packing stored humanities collections in preparation for a move to a newly constructed, environmentally improved collections storage and processing space. A consulting conservator will provide an on-site training practicum to new and continuing volunteers, interns and staff, emphasizing packing methods for the move, and focusing on important Southwest collections that have not been rehoused. This crucial project will protect important humanities collections and prepare the staff and volunteers for a safe move. The Conservator will assist the Registrar in evaluating environmental monitoring data and updating the Conservation Plan and the Rehousing and Storage Plan to prepare for the transition of the collections to the new space.
