Preservation, digitization, cataloging, and creation of online access to 540 hours of the song, dance, and oratory of Sealaska Heritage Institute’s biennial festivals, from their start in 1982 to the present.

Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) is perhaps best known throughout Alaska and the “Lower 48” (the contiguous United States) for its biennial Celebration, a major dance-and-culture festival that celebrates the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures of Southeast Alaska and other Native groups that join in the event. SHI designed its three-year Celebration: 10,000 Years of Cultural Survival project to edit its digitized recordings of Celebrations 1982-1988; migrate, preserve, and edit its recordings of Celebrations 1990-2016; and create online access to 540 edited hours of songs, dances, and oratory from Celebrations 1982-2018 on two platforms: YouTube and Proficio for the Web. This video will be presented by dance group and will also be searchable by performance, community, Celebration year, and when possible, by specific speakers. SHI will also create two short educational videos about Celebration which will complement the project.

Abstract: Although the full finding aid will not be entirely complete until the end of the project, the Archivist has updated the information for all of the Celebration years that have videos posted publicly to YouTube. At the time of submission, this will include Celebration 1990 although that was posted in June of 2022 and falls out of the grant period, 1990 will be reported on in the final report. Abstract: Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) designed its three-year Celebration: 10,000 Years of Cultural Survival project to edit the previously digitized recordings of Celebrations 1982-1988; migrate, preserve, and edit the recordings of Celebrations 1990-2016; and create access to 741 edited hours of songs, dances, and oratory from Celebrations 1982-2016. These Celebration videos are offered on two online platforms: YouTube and Proficio for the Web. The project will allow tribal members, researchers, and the general public to personalize their viewing online experience to watch the historic videos by dance group, performance, community, Celebration year, and when possible, by tribal orators. The major project goals were to: (1) digitize footage documenting 18 biennial Celebrations spanning four decades including at-risk footage, which will be preserved in SHI’s climate-controlled archives, and (2) provide public access to that footage. Furthermore, the project will standardize SHI’s metadata creation and importation methods and establish a precedent of public access to footage from all future Celebrations.
