Tracing a History of Atlanta's Public Transit (Web Resource)

Abstract: Atlanta, originally named Terminus, has a profound history which is extensively intertwined with transit. This project visualizes how the city's public transit system, now a shadow of what it once was, falls short of its far-reaching intentions. By highlighting the routes which have been proposed in the development of these systems, this project aims to contribute to larger discussions taking place around the topic of public transit in Atlanta. This story map was created by a team of Student Innovation Fellows at Georgia State University (GSU) working within the University Library's Collaborative University Research and Visualization Environment (CURVE) during the 2014-2015 academic year.

ATLMaps (Computer Program)
Title: ATLMaps
Author: Jay Varner
Abstract: ATLMaps is a collaboration between Georgia State University and Emory University. The project is in active and heavy development. The ATLmaps project combines archival maps, geospatial data visualization, and user contributed multimedia location pinpoints to promote investigation into any number of issues about Atlanta. This innovative online platform will allow users to layer an increasing number of interdisciplinary data to address the complex issues that cities pose. The project looks to offer a framework that incorporates storytelling reliant on the geospatial data and for normalizing input across a range of data sets about Atlanta so that material can be cross-compared in novel ways, allowing users to make connections between data sources and ask questions that would not be apparent when only looking at one particular project. The ATLmaps project will also encourage knowledgeable members of the university and local communities to curate data on the site to demonstrate the possibilities for synthesizing material across projects and data types.

Developing a Digital Map Collection for Research and Teaching: The Planning Atlanta: A New City in the Making, 1930s – 1990s Collection (Article)
Title: Developing a Digital Map Collection for Research and Teaching: The Planning Atlanta: A New City in the Making, 1930s – 1990s Collection
Author: Joseph Hurley
Abstract: he Georgia State University Library's “Planning Atlanta: A New City in the Making, 1930s–1990s” collection is transforming a once seldom used and disconnected assortment of city planning maps and city planning documents into an organized and sought-after interactive digital collection. By digitizing and collating this material into a distinct digital collection and creating meaningful descriptive metadata, this once largely hidden collection is now easily discoverable. Seeking to move beyond the traditional digital library model of simply providing digital equivalents of tangible objects, the Planning Atlanta digital collection has been developed with the goal of providing multiple ways for users to access and engage with these maps. This collection not only provides users with traditional access to digitized maps and full text publications, the Planning Atlanta collection also provides users with direct access to georectified TIFF images and also offers users the option to view each map as a Google Maps– and Google Earth–tiled overlay. Tailored specifically to substantially augment the usefulness of these maps for both research and teaching, these interactive and dynamic collection features allow this rich spatial content to be easily used by both expert GIS users and non-GIS users.

Title: Planning Atlanta: A New City in the Making, 1930s - 1990s
Author: Georgia State University Library
Abstract: Planning Atlanta: A New City in the Making, 1930s – 1990s is a digital collection of material related to city planning and urban development in Atlanta. The collection consists of city planning maps, city planning publications, demographic data, photographs depicting planning activities, oral histories, and aerial photographs. Additionally, items from other agencies and entities, such as the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), are included. Planning Atlanta is a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) funded project and seeks to move beyond the traditional digital library model of simply providing digital equivalents of tangible objects. This city planning focused collection provides free and open access to digitally transformed, dynamic, and engaging content with the goal of enhancing this material for educational and research uses. Many items in the collection have been transformed into digital objects that can be engaged with and manipulated.

Forget Me Not (Exhibition)
Title: Forget Me Not
Curator: Julia Brock
Abstract: Forget Me Not focused on conceptual practices that mirror the process of memory through forgetting--blurring, gaps, irregularities in a normally regular format, bit rot, decay, hidden value, erasure. This group exhibition included a number of contemporary female artists who are working in the Atlanta area and nationally, as well as non-art and art objects from collections. Artists included: Kelly Kristin Jones, Katherine Taylor, Penelope Umbrico, Gretchen Hupfel, Lauren Peterson, Zipporah Thompson, Jess Jones, Judith Scott, and Emily Gomez The exhibition also presented ATLas, a research project by the curators that unearthed and visualized past significant art events and local organizations in the 1970s that were started, run, or organized by women who are still integral to the arts in Atlanta. This project compiled oral histories, objects, photographs, and maps to look at sites, events, and people who are less known or forgotten today.

Transforming and Enhancing Access to Printed Demographic Data and City Planning Maps (Conference Paper/Presentation)
Title: Transforming and Enhancing Access to Printed Demographic Data and City Planning Maps
Author: Joseph Hurley
Abstract: The Georgia State University Library holds a historically significant collection of Atlanta area city planning maps, publications, and demographic data. Dated from the 1930s to the early 2000s, this print collection is a largely unique set of 1500 maps and 250 publications, which depict and describe the built environment and demographic make-up of metropolitan Atlanta. Within this collection is a printed data series, "Population and Housing," which contains yearly demographic estimates from the regional level down to the census tract level for each year from 1955 to 2003. Access to this planning material has been hindered due to a lack of cataloging, the oversized format of the maps, and by the print-only format of the demographic data. To increase access and to enhance the usefulness of this material, the library has digitized these items, geo-referenced each map, and has extracted and converted the demographic data into a digital dataset and provides free access to this material from the Planning Atlanta site. This presentation will discuss how transforming this once prohibitively difficult to access material into useful formats, such as Excel and GeoTiff files, has greatly increased its accessibility, leading to successful integration of this material into teaching and research projects.
