Societies in Transition in Early Greece: An Archaeological History (Book)
Title: Societies in Transition in Early Greece: An Archaeological History
Author: Alex Knodell
Abstract: Situated at the disciplinary boundary between prehistory and history, this book presents a new synthesis of Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age Greece, from the rise and fall of Mycenaean civilization, through the "Dark Age," and up to the emergence of city-states in the Archaic period. This period saw the growth and decline of varied political systems and the development of networks that would eventually expand to nearly all shores of the Middle Sea. Alex R. Knodell argues that in order to understand how ancient Greece changed over time, one must analyze how Greek societies constituted and reconstituted themselves across multiple scales, from the local to the regional to the Mediterranean. Knodell employs innovative network and spatial analyses to understand the regional diversity and connectivity that drove the growth of early Greek polities. As a groundbreaking study of landscape, interaction, and sociopolitical change, Societies in Transition in Early Greece systematically bridges the divide between the Mycenaean period and the Archaic Greek world to shed new light on an often-overlooked period of world history.

Abstract: The numerous rescue excavations conducted in Athens and Attica by the Archaeological Service during and after the major construction projects of the 2004 Olympic Games brought to light significant new prehistoric finds which have transformed our understanding of the region in prehistory. However, despite their importance, the new discoveries had remained mostly unnoticed by the international community, as the results were scattered in various publications, and no synthesis was ever attempted. The goal of the 2015 international conference Athens and Attica in Prehistory, which was organized by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, the University of Athens (Department of Archaeology and History of Art), the Museum of Cycladic Art and the Ephorate of Antiquites of East Attica (Hellenic Ministry of Culture) was to gather scholars working in the region and present for the first time a survey of Attic prehistory which would include the most recent discoveries and integrate over a century of scholarship. The 668- page conference proceedings include over 66 papers in Greek and English with sections dedicated to topography, the palaeo-environment, the Neolithic, the Chalcolithic transition, the Early Bronze Age, the Middle and Late Bronze Age, as well as the contacts between Attica and its neighbouring regions. A series of new detailed maps, derived from an exhaustive GIS-related database, provide the most up to date topographical and archaeological survey of Prehistoric Attica. Athens and Attica in Prehistory provides the most complete overview of the region from the Neolithic to the end of the Late Bronze Age. Its importance goes beyond the field of Aegean prehistory, as it paves the way for a new understanding of Attica in the Early Iron Age and indirectly throws new light on the origins of what will later become the polis of the Athenians.

The Fortress of Eleutherai: New Insights from Survey, Architecture, and Epigraphy (Article)
Title: The Fortress of Eleutherai: New Insights from Survey, Architecture, and Epigraphy
Author: Alex Knodell
Author: Sylvian Fachard
Author: S.C. Murray
Author: K. Papangeli
Abstract: The fortress at Eleutherai is an iconic example of ancient Greek military architecture. Our knowledge of the site, however, is limited by several problems related to its date, construction, function, and identity. The Mazi Archaeological Project has undertaken a detailed, multicomponent study of the fortress and its surroundings using a combination of intensive field survey, architectural mapping, and photogrammetry. A new architectural plan clarifies construction phases and building techniques, while surface finds and epigraphy inform the history of the occupation of Eleutherai, which is especially tied to Boiotia. In the second part of this article we provide new insights concerning the economics of constructing major fortifications and their role in regional politics.

Abstract: The Small Cycladic Islands Project (SCIP) is a diachronic archaeological survey of numerous small, uninhabited islands in the Cycladic archipelago. There is a rich history of archaeological survey and comparative island archaeology in the Aegean. SCIP narrows the size of an individual island survey, and at the same time expands the conceptual and comparative scope by surveying multiple islands with the same set of methods and in the context of the same project. All target islands are currently uninhabited, and many probably never sustained any habitation. We know from other cases, however, that such places were used for a variety of purposes in the past, including as goat islands, cemeteries, stopovers, and pirate hideaways. In its initial field season in 2019, SCIP carried out comprehensive surveys of 10 islets in the vicinity of Paros. This comparative program of research provides new insights concerning various types of human activities—habitation and non-habitation, diachronic and incidental—that took place in marginal island environments.

Cursing Theophrastos in Paros (Article)
Title: Cursing Theophrastos in Paros
Author: Jessica Lamont
Abstract: This article publishes a cast-lead figurine from the early fourth century BCE, excavated in a tile grave on the Cycladic island of Paros. The figurine was pierced with seven iron nails, the arms were bound behind the back, and a lead collar shackled the neck. Inscriptions on the body in the epichoric Parian alphabet suggest that the object was produced locally. The aggressive nailing, binding, shackling, inscribing, and modulation of the figurine, combined with the mortuary context and abundant parallels, suggest that the object was ritual in nature, implicated as an effigy (κολοσσός, Rachepuppe, or so-called voodoo doll) in a binding curse. Examination of the object in relation to the growing corpus of curse effigies sheds new light on private curse rituals, onomastics, the local Parian script, and notions of sexuality and competition in the classical Aegean.

Crafting Curses in Classical Athens: A New Cache of exametric Katadesmoi (Article)
Title: Crafting Curses in Classical Athens: A New Cache of exametric Katadesmoi
Author: Jessica Lamont
Abstract: This article presents a remarkable cache of five Attic curse tablets, four of which are published here for the first time. Excavated in situ in a pyre-grave outside the Athenian Long Walls, the texts employ very similar versions of a single binding curse. After situating the cache in its archaeological context, all texts are edited with a full epigraphic commentary. A discussion then follows, in which the most striking features of the texts are highlighted: in addition to the peculiar “first four-year period” (πρώτη πενθετηρίς) that the curses were meant to outlast, and the unparalleled term κυνωτόν, these texts are unusual in that they preserve over a full line of dactylic hexameter. The metrical formulae, combined with the presence of deictic language, may suggest that parts of the archetype curse underpinning these texts once circulated orally, in performative ritual contexts. The cache affords a singular glimpse into the process of curse-creation around 400 BCE, especially the ways in which a curse-writer could customize a fixed template spell to suit a client’s needs and circumstances. These tablets illuminate the shadowy process behind the creation of Athenian curse tablets, and the growing traffic in “magic” by the end of the fifth century BCE.

The Curious Case of the Cursed Chicken: A New Binding Ritual from the Athenian Agora (Article)
Title: The Curious Case of the Cursed Chicken: A New Binding Ritual from the Athenian Agora
Author: Jessica Lamont
Abstract: Excavations in the Athenian Agora recovered a ceramic pot buried in the back corner of an industrial and commercial building; the exterior of the vessel was inscribed with over 30 names, many female and several new or previously unattested in Attica. The pot contained the dismembered head and lower limbs of a young chicken. The vessel was pierced with a large iron nail and buried with a coin beneath the floor of the Agora's Classical Commercial Building sometime around 300 B.C. The ritual assemblage belongs to the realm of Athenian binding curses and aimed to “bind” or inhibit the physical and cognitive faculties of the named individuals. This unique discovery offers new evidence for the practice of “magic” in the heart of ancient Athens.

Beta Samati: Discovery and Excavation of an Aksumite Town (Article)
Title: Beta Samati: Discovery and Excavation of an Aksumite Town
Author: Jessica Lamont
Author: M. J. Harrower
Abstract: The Empire of Aksum was one of Africa's most influential ancient civilisations. Traditionally, most archaeological fieldwork has focused on the capital city of Aksum, but recent research at the site of Beta Samati has investigated a contemporaneous trade and religious centre located between Aksum and the Red Sea. The authors outline the discovery of the site and present important finds from the initial excavations, including an early basilica, inscriptions and a gold intaglio ring. From daily life and ritual praxis to international trade, this work illuminates the role of Beta Samati as an administrative centre and its significance within the wider Aksumite world.

Greek Satyr Drama in the Late Hellenistic and Roman Imperial Periods: An Epigraphical Perspective (Book Section)
Title: Greek Satyr Drama in the Late Hellenistic and Roman Imperial Periods: An Epigraphical Perspective
Author: Mali Skotheim
Editor: Andreas P. Antonopoulos
Editor: Menelaos M. Christopoulos
Editor: George W.M. Harrison
Abstract: The origins of satyr drama, and particularly the reliability of the account in Aristotle, remains contested, and several of this volume’s contributions try to make sense of the early relationship of satyr drama to dithyramb and attempt to place satyr drama in the pre-Classical performance space and traditions. What is not contested is the relationship of satyr drama to tragedy as a required cap to the Attic trilogy. Here, however, how Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides (to whom one complete play and the preponderance of the surviving fragments belong) envisioned the relationship of satyr drama to tragedy in plot, structure, setting, stage action and language is a complex subject tackled by several contributors. The playful satyr chorus and the drunken senility of Silenos have always suggested some links to comedy and later to Atellan farce and phlyax. Those links are best examined through language, passages in later Greek and Roman writers, and in art. The purpose of this volume is probe as many themes and connections of satyr drama with other literary genres, as well as other art forms, putting satyr drama on stage from the sixth century BC through the second century AD. The editors and contributors suggest solutions to some of the controversies, but the volume shows as much that the field of study is vibrant and deserves fuller attention.

The Puppet and the Puppet-Master in Ancient Greece: Fragments of an Art Form (Conference Paper/Presentation)
Title: The Puppet and the Puppet-Master in Ancient Greece: Fragments of an Art Form
Author: Mali Skotheim
Abstract: In this context, she considered ancient puppetry performances at ancient Greek festivals, and collected evidence of ancient Greek puppets in literary and epigraphical sources. She found her way to puppets whilst working on an archaeological project in Sicily and discovered the thriving puppeteering traditions of the island. Dr. Skotheim is currently preparing a book manuscript on festivals, covering the history of Greek dramatic performance in the Roman era, from ca. 200 BCE to 517 CE. For the 2019/20 academic year, Skotheim holds a Frances A. Yates Fellowship at the Warburg Institute in London where she is also working on her next book project, Radical Dancers: A Cultural and Intellectual History of Pantomime. This new work considers the cultural and intellectual impact of pantomime dance from its origins in the first century BCE through its afterlife in the 18th century, in the performing arts (ballet and harlequinade), visual art and aesthetics, rhetoric, language theory (including sign language), gesture, and the construction of a history of ancient and modern dance.
