16 months of stipend support (2 fellowships) per year for three years and a contribution to defray costs associated with the selection of fellows.
This application seeks three years of funding to support two residential postdoctoral fellowships for scholars with research backgrounds in art history, architecture, archaeology, anthropology, history, and cultural heritage and historic preservation, among others. The NEH fellowships would complement a diversity of other fellowship opportunities hosted by the GRI, Getty Museum, and Getty Conservation Institute and while in residence, Fellows will be part of the broader community of scholars and research professionals. NEH Fellows would be selected through an independent committee, the members of which chosen from a diversity of institution types and geographical regions across the US. [edited by staff]

Materializing the Ancestors: Sacred Body Parts and Fragments in the Ancient Near East (Book Section)Title: Materializing the Ancestors: Sacred Body Parts and Fragments in the Ancient Near East
Author: Melissa Cradic
Editor: Nicola Laneri
Abstract: Melissa Cradic's essay explains how the stages of skeletal fragmentation materialized the shifting social and personhood statuses of the dead in the years and decades after death. Human intervention intentionally accelerated corpse decomposition in a series of ritual phases, while divine intervention recomposed the dead into a new supernatural entity: household ancestors.

Sensing the dead in household burials of the second millennium bce (Book Section)Title: Sensing the dead in household burials of the second millennium bce
Author: Melissa Cradic
Editor: Kiersten Neumann and Allison Thomason
Abstract: A sensory approach to the study of ancient funerary rituals offers fresh insights into the sights, sounds, tastes, textures, and smells of death and burial. This chapter situates the varied roles of corpses—and their attendant olfactory, visual, and tactile characteristics—in funerary rituals of the second millennium bce Levant. The study argues that close and continuing interaction with human remains in reused intramural burials played a significant role in the transformation of the social status of the dead after burial. Intramural burials occurred widely throughout the region and will be presented through two case studies: Royal Hypogeum at Qatna in Syria (c. 1800–1350 bce); and Tomb 100 at Tel Megiddo in Israel (c. 1600–1450 bce). Additionally, this chapter devotes special attention to novel sensory experiences that have yet to be addressed involving use of mind-altering substances in funerary rituals of the ancient Near East. Altering the mind could both mitigate unpleasant conditions of shared burial spaces and enhance mourners’ interactions with the dead as bodies and as persons.

Palestine during the Bronze Age (Book Section)Title: Palestine during the Bronze Age
Author: Robert Homsher
Author: Melissa Cradic
Editor: Katharine Dell
Abstract: This chapter presents a synthesis of major cultural developments in ancient Palestine from the Early Bronze Age through end of the Late Bronze Age (ca. 3600–1100 BCE). It traces diachronic patterns of settlement, urbanism, architecture, material culture, trade, and relationships between inhabitants of Palestine and their neighbors. Taking a critical approach to issues of ethnicity and identity, this chapter problematises traditional models that view population movement and displacement as primary drivers of cultural change. Archaeological evidence demonstrates that development of social complexity was a nonlinear process impacted by internal and external variables.

Area K: Intramural Pit and Jar Burials (Level K-10) (Book Section)Title: Area K: Intramural Pit and Jar Burials (Level K-10)

Abstract: The excavation of the courtyard house of Level K-10 in Area K (Chapter 2.1) yielded a considerable number of intramural burials. Burying in this manner was a well-known practice in the southern Levant in general during this period and at Megiddo in particular. The Megiddo burials were installed under the floors of the domestic unit, and in two cases alongside its exterior wall, lowered into the brick framework of the Middle Bronze fortification. Ceramic and radiocarbon data suggest that some of the burials were dug only after the Level K-10 house was abandoned (and before the Level K-9 house was constructed), defining a late Level K-10 burial phase. In this chapter, 15 graves and a total of 21 individuals are presented.
