12 months of fellowship stipends (1 fellowship) for one year.
The goal of this request from the American Philological Association (hereafter APA) is to fund Fellowships that will enable American scholars to engage in an international collaborative research project of a kind not available in this country: working for a year with foreign colleagues in the preparation of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae (hereafter TLL) at the Thesaurus Institute in Munich, Germany. The primary research goal of the Institute has been and remains the production of this lexicon (TLL), which is an indispensable reference work for humanities scholars of the ancient and medieval worlds. All members of the Institute (both permanent staff and short-term international Fellows) research and prepare articles on individual Latin words for publication in the TLL. Since 1984, the APA, in conjunction with the NEH, has funded an international TLL Fellow. In this renewal application, we request that the number of annual fellowships funded be increased from one to two.

Abstract: The task of the institute is to produce the first comprehensive scholarly dictionary of ancient Latin from the earliest times down to AD 600. The work is based on an archive of about 10 million slips which takes account of all surviving texts. In the older texts there is a slip for each occurrence of each word; the later ones are generally covered by a selection of lexicographically relevant examples. Nowadays this material is supplemented, where appropriate, by the use of modern data-banks. The dictionary articles result from a critical inspection and interpretation of this material. They allow the user to follow the development of meaning and usage in each word. Publication is in separate fascicules; more than two thirds of the complete work have appeared in the printed version and also (on the initiative of the publishers) in electronic form.
