To prepare for publication an interpretive study of early Medieval wall painting in ancient Persian empire of Sogdiana. ABSTRACT: Project to prepare for publication an interpretive study of early Medieval wall painting in ancient Persian empire of Sogdiana (part of modern Soviet Bukhara). Special emphasis on artistic tradition of pre-Islamic state, which influenced other Central Asian civilization, notably cities along caravan route in eastern Central Asia and provincial China. Emphasis of study on clear distinction between secular and sacred themes, a distinction which may illuminate other aspects of Asian art and civilization. Work with Russian scholars on project will foster international cooperation, and hopefully increase respect for American scholarship. Funds for salary, research materials, film, travel.
