Publication of volume 13, the final volume of the letterpress edition of the Papers of Nathanael Greene. (12 months)
The main purpose of the one-year grant requested here is to complete the 13th and final volume of the critically acclaimed letterpress edition of the papers of Nathanael Greene, George Washington's top lieutenant in the American Revolution. In finishing three decades of scholarly effort, the Greene Papers staff will also complete some minor editorial preparations for a future electronic edition of the series and will prepare the project's records for preservation and reference use in the R.I. Historical Society Library. The Greene Papers provide a comprehensive documentary history of the Revolution, for they deal with major political and social, as well as military, issues and help in particular to illuminate the under-studied history of the South in the Revolution. Greene played key roles in the winning of the war by his successful campaigns in the Carolinas and Georgia and in the restoration of civil government and social order in those states.
