The Yale Edition of the Works of Samuel Johnson

FAIN: RQ-50558-11

Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, NY 12604-0001)
Robert DeMaria (Project Director: November 2010 to December 2014)

Completion and preparation for publication of the last two (out of twenty-three) volumes of the works of 18th-century English writer Samuel Johnson, and development of a digital edition. (36 months)

The purpose of the Yale Edition of the Works of Samuel Johnson is to make widely available the works of Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) in carefully edited volumes, with full textual apparatus, and with introductions and commentary to guide the "informed literate reader." Twenty-one volumes are published or in press. Two volumes remain to be completed in the period of the grant: "Early Biographical Writings" and "Miscellaneous Prose." As these volumes are being completed, we intend to create and incorporate them into the Digital Edition of the Yale Johnson, with the full cooperation of Yale University Press. By providing a web-based system for content aggregation, scholarship, and publishing, Yale University Press's Digital Scholarship Platform will facilitate and advance the goals of the original Johnson project. The Digital Yale Johnson will be more widely available than the Print Edition, and it will enable new kinds of research as well as links to related digital projects.

The Yale Edition of the Works of Samuel Johnson, Volume XIX, Biographical Writings: Soldiers, Scholars, and Friends (Book)
Title: The Yale Edition of the Works of Samuel Johnson, Volume XIX, Biographical Writings: Soldiers, Scholars, and Friends
Author: Samuel Johnson
Editor: O.M. Brack, Jr.
Editor: Robert DeMaria, Jr.
Abstract: Well before publishing the Lives of the Poets, Samuel Johnson was an accomplished biographer, having written the lives of numerous scholars, scientists, philosophers, critics, and theologians (including Peter Burman, Sir Thomas Browne, and Confucius) as well as select military and political men (such as Sir Francis Drake, Admiral Blake, and Frederick the Great). This volume contains these earlier biographies as well as epitaphs and obituaries for ordinary individuals with whom Johnson shared a personal connection. This collection of life writing displays Johnson performing in his favorite literary genre in the many years before he wrote his celebrated Lives of the Poets.
