A conference and volume of collected essays on the American Civil War in an international context. (24 months)
We propose a conference and book of essays that will bring together historians of the US, Latin America, and Europe to examine the entangled histories of these regions during a decade of civil war, foreign invasion, and slave emancipation. We ask: How can we understand the US Civil War in its international context? How are we to comprehend the interconnected history of the Americas and the Atlantic World? What was the immediate impact and long-term significance of the multiple crises of the 1860s on the future of democracy and slavery? The goal is to enlarge the framework through which we usually view the US Civil War and to understand it as one of a set of interrelated clashes that shook the Americas and Europe in the 1860s. Our project unites seventeen scholars from three continents and eight countries. They will braid their specialized knowledge of what are now disconnected parts into a common history that transcends any single national narrative.

American Civil Wars: A Bibliography (Web Resource)Title: American Civil Wars: A Bibliography
Author: Charlton Yingling
Abstract: This website offers a bibliography as a service to scholars, students, and general readers. It is a companion site to the conference American Civil Wars: The Entangled Histories of the United States, Latin America, and Europe in the 1860s. This three-day conference, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, will be held March 19-21, 2014 at the University of South Carolina and will bring together leading historians from the US, Latin America, and Europe to reexamine the hitherto disconnected histories of the rebellions, civil wars, conquest, and emancipations that shook the Americas and Europe.
The bibliography will highlight scholarship on the interconnected, transnational linkages that fueled these events, formed their trajectories, and followed into their aftermaths. This is an active project that will receive updates along with regional and thematic pages, and welcomes input from users/readers.
