Development of a series of short documentary films and related digital components about the lives and accomplishments of women during the Progressive Era.

Unladylike is a multimedia series featuring little-known American women from the turn of the 20th century, set to launch in 2020 for the centennial of women's suffrage. Through thirty-one animated documentary shorts for each day of Women's History Month, we profile female trailblazers from the Progressive Era (1890s-1920s) who broke barriers in then-male-dominated professions such as science, business, aviation, journalism, medicine, and the arts. We bring these stories, and the societal conditions these women faced, to life through archive, original artwork and animation, voice-over, and interviews with historians, scholars, and accomplished women of today. Through digital and social media distribution, along with community and educational outreach nationwide, audiences will gain a nuanced, inclusive understanding of U.S. history and women’s contributions during the Progressive Era, and explore how this history affects American lives today.

Abstract: The series trailer posted on the homepage of our website provides an overview of UNLADYLIKE2020, presents women pioneers in various fields during the Progressive Era, and hints at the historical factors that contributed to their accomplishments a century ago. We showcase the project’s unique visual approach to history, juxtaposing archival images with contemporary visuals, Amelie Chabannes’s colorful artwork and animation, dynamic contemporary music, and compelling interviews with accomplished women of today.

Abstract: The pilot episode rough cut (07:05) tells the story of the life and times of Bessie Coleman (1892-1926), the first African American female pilot, highlighting her achievements, putting them into a historical context, and demonstrating her legacy on future generations of black aviators. The important events of Coleman’s biography are intercut with various humanities themes, including: challenges to gender roles and race-based limitations, technological change, class issues, historical events like the Great Migration, race riots, segregation, the Ku Klux Klan, and lynchings, and the limited but nonetheless real opportunities for black women in the new industrial urban age at the turn of the 20th century. The video showcases our signature style, mixing archival black and white photographs, films, and newspaper images together with Chabannes’ unique and colorful artwork and animations. It features on-camera interviews with playwright and actress Madeline McCray, who wrote a play about Coleman (“A Dream to Fly”) and was profoundly influenced by her, and U.S. Air Force Colonel Merryl Tengesdal, the first and only African American woman to fly the U2 plane, and one of only 4% of pilots in the U.S. today who are women. Narration signposts critical facts about Coleman’s life and context, and voice-over brings her own voice back to life with quotations pulled from newspaper interviews she conducted during her lifetime. The music is contemporary, and the editing style is fast-paced and dynamic. All members of our academic advisory board have provided feedback along the way, and have signed off on this rough cut.
