FAIN: ZH-252981-17

Texas State University - San Marcos (San Marcos, TX 78666-4684)
Eugene Lee (Project Director: May 2016 to present)

The hiring of a Humanities Program Specialist and consultants, and travel for Black and Latino Playwright Conference participants.

The annual Texas State University Black and Latino Playwrights Conference offers Black and Latino playwrights opportunities and resources to develop new, unpublished and unproduced plays. Selected writers work with humanities scholars and guest artists to navigate a week-long creative collaborative process of deconstruction, analysis, rewriting and rehearsing joined by Texas State University theatre students culminating in public script-in-hand reading presentations of the developed scripts with audience talk-back sessions analyzing the cultural implications of each play. More than one thousand audience members participate from Texas State University in San Marcos and surrounding communities including Austin and San Antonio. Through dialogue at public readings the audience is part of the process and able to share their thoughts and reactions to these literary treasures. This grant will fund 3 years of the conference with additional humanities activities and staff.
