One two-day Picturing America conference in summer 2011 for fifty K-12 educators to integrate American portraiture into core subjects in the Texas school curriculum.

Picturing Americans is a two-day summer educator institute that will explore the timeline of American history through portraiture, highlighting artworks that show Americans engaged in pivotal historical moments—moments that are also repeatedly depicted by the Picturing America poster sets. Using images from the poster sets, presentations from prominent humanities scholars, teacher resources, and corresponding images from the Amon Carter Museum's own collection, the institute will provide a vivid visual history of the United States by emphasizing the very people who made the country what it is today. In looking at both portrait subject and artist, Picturing Americans will help teachers (and by proxy students) understand how American artists have helped document the history of the United States, from the Revolutionary Period up through the Civil Rights Movement.
