A one-year project to develop a humanities-centered Indigenous languages and cultures certificate program.

We request a development grant to develop a humanistic Indigenous Literatures and Cultures undergraduate certificate program at our small, regional university, Lake Superior State University in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our certificate program will offer undergraduate students of all majors an opportunity for humanistic study of the literature, languages, and cultures of Indigenous people. Our program will revitalize the role of the humanities across all fields in higher education at the same time that it creates recognized academic spaces for the Indigenous peoples who are notoriously absent from much humanistic study.
