Becoming Californians/Becoming Americans

FAIN: BC-50179-04

California Humanities (Oakland, CA 94607-3945)
James D. Quay (Project Director: March 2004 to September 2006)

A series of activities that explore California's diverse immigrant populations, including reading and discussion programs, Writers-in-Conversation programs, and the creation of an anthology of stories.

“Becoming Californians/Becoming Americans” will allow diverse Californians to explore the stories of immigrants, including the contributions of centuries of diverse immigrant populations toward the development of America’s rich civic culture. The project is inspired by the Council’s highly successful 2002 program, “Reading The Grapes of Wrath,” which involved tens of thousands of Californians. Like”Reading The Grapes of Wrath”, programs will take place in libraries, classrooms and other cultural institutions.
