The 2008 teacher institute, "From Disunion to Empire: The United States, 1850-1900," exhibits, a grant program, public lectures, a cultural heritage and community history intiative, and activities to support the NEH's Picturing American initiative.

Humanities Texas will sponsor two summer teacher institutes examining significant developments in U.S. history; create and support traveling exhibits; make grants to programs exploring “We the People” topics; offer public lectures; continue development of a history program encouraging communities to explore local traditions that respond to themes in U.S. history and culture and comprise the collective American experience; and participate in the new “Picturing America” initiative.
