Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities (Northampton, MA 01060-2406)
Pleun Clara Bouricius (Project Director: March 2009 to January 2014)

The creation of a grant program for public humanities projects on the theme "Liberty and Justice for All;" a public symposium, "Soldiers and Citizens: Military and Civic culture in America;" and a film and discussion series marking the 150th anniversary of John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry.

In FY 2009 Mass Humanities will focus its grant making and programming on its Liberty and Justice for All initiative. We will (1) offer $10K (twice the usual limit) for public humanities projects on the LJA theme, (2) focus our annual symposium on the interplay between military and civilian culture in the U.S., and (3) organize a local history film and discussion series about the use of violence to achieve liberty and justice in the context of the 150th anniversary of John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry.
