FAIN: BC-50504-09

New York Council for the Humanities (New York, NY 10038-4364)
Jane B. McNamara (Project Director: May 2009 to July 2012)

Funding will support the expansion of "Together - Book Talk for Kids and Parents," the Council's family reading program, and the development and testing of a dual language model in Spanish and English.

The New York Council for the Humanitiesâ?? â??Togetherâ??Book Talk for Kids and Parentsâ? is an intergenerational book discussion program that offers a forum for parents and their 9-to-11 year old children to talk about books and ideas at their local library. â??Togetherâ? is co-facilitated by a librarian and a humanities scholar who involve families in discussions about a variety of personal, public, and historic issues through the close reading of selected picture books and novels. The Council requests â??We The Peopleâ? funds to expand the reach of this successful program to New York Stateâ??s growing Latino population by providing a dual language version of the program. The Council would also use â??We The Peopleâ? funds to provide support for those libraries who have completed one â??Togetherâ? series and who wish to continue this program.
