To support Prime Time Family Reading Time, a library-based reading and discussion program of humanities themes for at-risk youth and their parents, and Kentucky Chautauqua in schools, including teachers' guides and curricular materials.

The Kentucky Humanities Council requests $48,000 for Prime Time Family Reading Time, a library-based reading and discussion of humanities themes for at-risk youth and their parents. Prime Time removes obstacles to families living in poverty and to immigrants who have no opportunities to interact in a positive environment that encourages civic engagement, educational opportunities, and understanding of ideas, issues, and values at the core of democracy. The proposed Prime Time programs are especially relevant to the theme of "A More Perfect Union." We also propose to use $62,750 to support Kentucky Chautauqua (dramatic first-person history presentations) in schools, including paying a part time consultant to represent the Council and help reach under-served, never-served areas. Complete with teachers' guides and curricular materials, these programs fill a need for social studies and broader humanities curricula at a time when schools can no longer afford field trips to historic sites.
