To support a traveling exhibition and complementary programming; a grant program focused on programs commemorating the sesquicentennial of the Civil War; the family reading program, Read from the Start, and the reading and discussion program for medical professionals, Literature and Medicine.

Each of the proposed programs of the Missouri Humanities Council focuses on the development of Missouri history and culture as it relates to the growth and development of the American experience. The programs range from public lectures to community dialogs, from development of educational support materials to the training of classroom teachers, from the sharing of experiences to the encouragement of personal experience, and it promotes literacy and cultural diversity into significant rural populations.
