Arthur M. Melzer (Project Director: November 2003 to June 2009)

Endowment for the programs of the Symposium on Science, Reason, and Modern Democracy.

We are seeking a Challenge Grant of $500,000 to help endow the Forum, a center for research and debate on the theory and practice of modern democracy. Founded in 1989 in the Department of Political Science at Michigan State University by three professors of political philosophy, the Forum seeks to improve the way that we think about the pressing cultural and political issues of our time by putting back together again the two sides of our collective academic brain: the humanities and the social sciences. The Forum sponsors lectures, conferences, publication, and teaching, as well as graduate, post-doctoral, and senior fellowships - all with any eye to bringing together the best representatives of the scientific and humanistic approaches to the study of human affairs.
