Enhancing Humanities Activities in Literary and Historical Manuscripts at The Pierpont Morgan LIbrary

FAIN: CH-50153-05

Morgan Library and Museum (New York, NY 10016-3405)
Robert Parks (Project Director: May 2004 to November 2008)

Endowment for an existing curator position, a new associate curator, and increased operating expenses for the Department of Literary and Historical Manuscripts.

The Morgan seeks a $750,000 challenge grant to support a greatly enhanced humanities program in the Department of Literary and Historical Manuscripts. After a decade of growth at this independent research library and museum, a good deal of which was due to activities in this Department, the Morgan is poised to expand its humanities services with a new building project and a new strategic plan. Challenge funds will enhance humanities scholarship as well as humanities programming for a broad public. The grant will endow (1) a Curatorship, which will be restructured to take on greater responsibility for humanities activities; (2) a new associate curatorship; and (3) increased operating expenses.
