Construction of a library addition to an American overseas research center and endowment for operating expenses for the new facility, including a librarian's salary, as well as bridge funding and development costs.

The Cyprus American Archaeological Research Institute (CAARI), based in Nicosia, Republic of Cyprus, plans to construct an underground addition to its headquarters building in order to provide the space required to meet the needs of its research collections and the scholars who use them. These collections, consisting of a library, archives, artifact reference specimens, slides, prints and drawings, represent an invaluable resource for the study of the history, archaeology, art history, religion, and related humanistic disciplines concerning Cyprus and adjacent eastern Mediterranean regions. CAARI's research facilities are used annually by a broad and varied community of local and international scholars and students. The added space will provide both reading and storage space, which is projected to meet the needs of the institute far into the foreseeable future. CAARI is seeking an NEH Challenge Grant totaling $2 million to support the construction of the addition and to create an endowment that will provide income that will be used toward the increased costs of operating an enlarged facility.
