Levine Museum of the New South (Charlotte, NC 28202-2508)
Emily F. Zimmern (Project Director: May 2005 to October 2009)

Endowment for research on post-Civil War Southern history and expanded community outreach through humanities programming.

Levine Museum of the New South requests a $500,000 NEH Challenge Grant to be matched by $1.5 million in new private gifts to establish a $2 million endowment that will 1) support ground-breaking research on post-Civil War Southern history and culture that leads to exhibitions and public programs and 2) expand community outreach through humanities programming and institute new professionally developed evaluation of all exhibits and programs to measure the impact and effectiveness of learning through Museum activities. The Museum has grown steadily since its founding in 1991, and has established a distinguished record of exhibitions and activities that use history to promote civic dialogue and help Americans understand how the past influences the present and can guide decisions about the future. The endowment will ensure permanent, consistent funding for these activities, and launch the Museum toward more ambitious projects that would not be possible without additional support.
