The Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities at the University of Virginia was founded in 1992 with the mission of applying information technology to humanities scholarship. To date, it has sponsored over 40 faculty research projects in nearly every humanities discipline. As one of the first digital humanities institutes in the world, IATH has played a leading role in founding this new approach towards scholarship. With support of the NEH Challenge Grant, IATH seeks to advance the field of digital humanities by pioneering projects based on collaborative, multisensory 3D user interfaces that integrate analytical tools with texts, images, maps, and dynamic 3D representations. To achieve this goal, IATH is conducting a capital campaign to build an endowment fund to be used for two related purposes: 1) maintaining and enhancing IATH's cyberinfrastructure of networking and data capture equipment, hardware and software; and 2) recruiting, retaining, and training IATH staff.
