African Art at the Newark Museum: Building for the Second Century

FAIN: CH-50876-11

Newark Museum (Newark, NJ 07102-3109)
Christa Clarke (Project Director: May 2010 to February 2017)

Renovation/expansion of the museum's African galleries and endowment to support programs, publications, and a new assistant curator for the Arts of Africa collection.

The Newark Museum requests a challenge grant of $700,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities to enhance access to/understanding of the humanities by renovating and expanding the Museum's African galleries and establishing an endowment dedicated to research, publications, and programming. The Project will enable the Museum to provide fresh perspectives on the arts and culture of this diverse, dynamic continent. The grant will be a powerful and timely catalyst for the Museum's African gallery expansion/endowment initiative, part of a larger capital campaign. When complete, the initiative will create one of the nation's most expansive and relevant interpretations of African art, including, to the best of our knowledge, the first permanent gallery devoted to contemporary art from Africa and its Diaspora anywhere. A supporting endowment will undergird the Museum's role as an international leader in this rapidly changing and influential field of growing interest worldwide.
