Endowment for humanities exhibitions and programs in a new wing of the museum.

An NEH Challenge grant will help to establish a Humanities Exhibition and Program Fund at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in support of exhibitions inspired by the museum’s collection, which includes significant works of art spanning three millennia. The endowment fund will also support associated catalogues, symposia, lectures, and programs which engage the public with significant humanities themes. In January 2012, the museum will open a new wing, adding significant value to visitors’ experience of the museum, its collection, and its programs. Most importantly, a larger exhibition gallery, enhanced by an introductory space for interpretive materials that will help guide visitors in the exhibition’s major themes. An exhibition and program endowment fund will allow the Gardner to engage in long-term planning for its exhibition schedule, helping to attract scholarly partnerships well in advance, and greatly strengthening the quality of associated humanities programming.
