The Center for Democratic Deliberation: Rhetorical Scholarship and Civic Education for the Twenty-First Century

FAIN: CH-51067-13

Pennsylvania State University (University Park, PA 16802-1503)
J. Michael Hogan (Project Director: May 2012 to December 2016)

Endowment of the activities of the Center for Democratic Deliberation.

The Center for Democratic Deliberation (CDD) at Penn State seeks an NEH Challenge Grant to support an ambitious yet realistic plan to become a national leader in the deliberative democracy movement. By creating a permanent endowment, the NEH grant will help the CDD respond to what some have labeled a "crisis" in our democracy by building on its existing capacities and pursuing new initiatives in research, education, and public outreach. These initiatives include experiments in digital publishing, support for emerging scholars, curriculum and co-curricular development projects, teacher training, and public engagement on issues relating to the quality of public discourse and civic learning and engagement. As Pennsylvania's land grant university, Penn State has a long history of serving the public through research and education, and the CDD aspires to continue that tradition by leading the way in rhetorical scholarship and civic education for the twenty-first century.
