Detroit Opera House, Infrastructure Revisions to Improve Accessibility and Enhance Educational Spaces

Renovations of the 1922 Detroit Opera House to improve accessibility and replace critical building systems. These renovations would improve compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, remedy occupant access limitations, increase capacity for public humanities and educational programs, and upgrade HVAC and other mechanical systems.

Michigan Opera Theatre seeks NEH Challenge funds to support renovations of the Detroit Opera House, a modified 1922 movie palace in downtown Detroit that serves 250,000 visitors annually with cultural and educational programs. MOT uses its position as an anchor institution to develop humanities-oriented programs that enhance patrons’ interpretation of artistic forms, and to inspire respectful conversations about art and the social conscience. Yet physical limitations of the structure, dated interpretive technology, and aging mechanical systems prove a challenge. Planned modifications will provide better accessibility and patron comfort, increase the number of spaces in which programs can be offered, and demonstrate our commitment to improving access to arts and culture programming and education in our community. With NEH support and our ability to leverage these challenge funds, MOT will secure the individual and foundational support needed to prepare this structure for its next act.
