Research and writing of a scholarly monograph and related articles on the social implications of use of artificial intelligence by the U.S. national security community.

Although scholarly attention has been devoted to the social and ethical implications of artificial intelligence (AI), few studies have looked at the social implications of AI for the U.S. intelligence community—a largely secret world that has major epistemological implications in terms of national security knowledge production. This project will provide a unique opportunity to study the imagination and design of AI in intelligence analysis through case studies of two defense research agencies, DARPA’s Explainable Artificial Intelligence project (XAI) and IARPA’s REASON project; the review of official policy documents; and interviews with past and current intelligence community members.
