Author: Grant Bollmer
Abstract: The Affect Lab explores the history of psychological research in North America and the manner in which psychologists have used media --through a variety of devices -- to measure and analyze emotion. Examining the deployment of such measurement tools as electrical shocks, photography, video, and the electroencephalograph over the course of the late 19th and 20th centuries, Bollmer argues that the research on emotions has confused the physiology of emotion with the tools that define its inscription. In doing so, he seeks to challenge the large body of humanities research surrounding affect theory, arguing that “affect” is not an innate neurological capacity of the body, but en effect of writing the body through specific modes of inscription.
