Development of an interdisciplinary Minority Studies Program. Courses offered in art, history, literature, political science and sociology, dealing with Blacks, Indians, Mexicans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Orientals and Jews. Development of an interdisciplinary Minority Studies Program. Five courses to be offered during fall semester, scheduled so that students can elect up to four courses for a full Minorities Semester. Courses offered in art, history, literature, political science and sociology with deal with blacks, Indians, Mexicans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Orientals and Jews. After Minorities Semester, students use January interim period for work on an interdisciplinary research project either in Washington, DC, using research facilities of the Smithsonian, National Archives and Library of Congress, or at University of Arizona, studying Mexican and Indian cultures in the border towns. Designed to give white students an awareness and appreciation of the cultural contributions of minority groups to American society, to familiarize them with the problems faced by these minority groups, both in the past and the present. Particularly relevant to large migrant worker and Indian minorities in Minnesota, as well as black ghetto residents in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Funds for salaries (director, specialist in minorities art, five graduate internships); per diem, travel and honoraria for 10 lecturers; summer institute for teaching staff (July 27-August 21, 1970)
