Cross-disciplinary program in philosophy (Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences). ABSTRACT: Department of Philosophy at Albany to develop both a sound standard program and a viable interdisciplinary structure. Grant covers initial phase: three cross-disciplinary appointments (Humanities-Natural Science, Humanities-Social Science, and Natural Science-Social Science), three traineeships (one in each interdisciplinary area) and initiation of Confrontation Series (interdisciplinary seminars). Contemporary department of philosophy should consist of an inner core of scholars in traditional areas and a group of interdisciplinarians competent to bridge between philosophy and other areas. It is no longer possible for one man to encompass all areas of knowledge. Necessary that a group or community in intellectuals carry on function of interpretation once exercised by the solitary philosopher. Must not be tied within a single discipline. Funds for salaries, travel and indirect cost for three years.
