Project to give candidates from large mid-western universities half-time teaching fellowships at independent colleges belonging to Great Lakes College Association, plus $2000 fellowships for following year to complete dissertations. ABSTRACT: Large universities tend to concentrate on research and research-oriented graduate programs; small liberal arts colleges emphasize undergraduate education, while lacking in research facilities. Project to bring these two complementary element together. Doctoral candidates from large-mid-western universities given half-time teaching fellowships at independent colleges belonging to GLCA, plus $2000 fellowships for following year to complete dissertation. First-round Associates funded under EO-22-68-1684, EO-142-68-3138; Second-round funded under EO-63-69-3328, EO-109-70-4279. Teaching associates return to graduate school with increased interest in teaching, many planning to return to teaching in small liberal arts colleges. Increased concern for undergraduate education, having taught both introductory and higher level courses in specialty. Released time of faculty used for curricular experimentation and development, as well as individual research. Preparation and distribution of extensive final report. Further planning among GLCA colleges and collaboration universities to continue programs by internal support rather than NEH funds. Funds for fellowships and relocation allowances, salaries, travel, supplies.
