In 2013, the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture will recognize the 30th anniversary of its Summer Institute for Teachers, a program seeded by the NEH as two summer seminar for high school English teachers in 1984 that has now been conducted for 29 years. This summer seminar was the foundation on which an entire center at the Dallas Institute has been conceived--the Louise and Donald Cowan center for Education--providing year-round, humanities-based programming for school teachers, principals and campus administrators, Texas superintendents, and citizens interested in issues in public education. In honor of the program's enduring success, the Dallas Institute will declare 2013 "The Year of the Teacher", officially launching the "Year" on February 9 with a lecture and seminar featuring the founder, Dr. Louise Cowan, 1990 National Humanities Medal winner, and other distinguished guests. The Dalllas Institute's "Year of the Teacher" will officially conclude in the fall of 2013 with its annual Education Forum, a program in which a book called _What is a Teacher?_, written by Summer Institute faculty, will be the focus of the program.
