Richard R. Schramm (Project Director: October 2005 to November 2008)

The development of additional essays on teaching the history of American religion for the "Divining America" educational website.

The National Humanities Center proposes to expand the "Divining America" website by adding thirteen new essays. The topics of these essays were selected by comparing the "religious" content of state standards with "Divining America's" current offerings. The new additions will specifically address and support the fresh emphasis that religion is receiving in standards across the nation. The essays will be written by Center Fellows and other leading scholars. Written in a colloquial style and running from 2,000 to 4,000 words, each essay will be divided into an expository section, a section that offers instructional advice based on intellectual cruces within a topic, and a section that contextualizes the topic in recent scholarship.
