Margaret Walker Alexander (Project Director: July 1973 to present)

Support is requested for a four-day symposium in November to celebrate the bicentennial of the publication of Phyllis Wheately's poems (London, 1773). Phyllis Wheatley was a black slave who lived in Boston and Providence; her poems are neoclassical and redolent of Pope's heroic couplets.
